Staind is an American rock band that formed in 1995 in Springfield, MA. Having met through friends, the band started covering Korn, Rage Against the Machine, Pearl Jam, and Tool, among others, and played at local clubs for a year and a half. Althought they had a good sound and lineup, establishing themselves took both time and effort.
Band members did everything from flipping burgers at McDonald's to mowing lawns to financing their first record and independent tour. "I've done many dishes in my day," vocalist Aaron Lewis recalled to Rolling Stone's Liza Ghorbani. "There was a time then Johnny (bassist Johnny April) was working three jobs and playing with us also." In those days, the band went by the name Stain, but then learned that the moniker had already been claimed by another group. "So we got real creative and added a D," explained Lewis.
Eventually, Staind acquired a concert slot with Limp Bizkit through a longtime friend. Shortly prior to the performance, Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst was appalled by Staind's grotesque album cover and unsuccessfully attempted to remove them from the bill. His perception changed after being impressed with their performance.
To date, Staind has recorded seven studio albums, has had five chart-topping singles, and sold over 15 million records worldwide.
