British artist Roger Waters was born in September 1943 and has had a long and illustrious career. He is perhaps best known as being a founding member of Pink Floyd, a progressive rock band who were particularly famous during the 70s. He was their bassist and lead vocalist.
After the departure of Syd Barrett, he went on to become one of the principal songwriters in the band. The release of the "Dark Side of the Moon" saw the band shoot to fame, but many will remember them for "The Wall." As a group they were tremendously creative and experimental, but there were differences between the various members.
Roger left the band in 1985, and it was the beginning of a bitter court battle which was settled out of court two years later. It would be another 18 years before he would perform with the group again. It's estimated that Pink Floyd have sold an incredible 200 million albums throughout the world.
Walters has also achieved considerable success as a solo artist and has also written songs for the animated film called When the Wind Blows. This film is based on a famous book by Raymond Briggs and is a bleak account of nuclear attack on the UK. The performer has also written a three act opera and has toured extensively as a solo performer.
Perhaps his biggest success has been with "The Wall." 2010 saw a worldwide tour of this performance. During a performance at the O2 Arena in London, Mason and Gilmour appeared with Waters to perform "Comfortably Numb" and "Outside the Wall."
He grew up in Cambridge and attended school there. This was also where he met Syd Barrett and David Gilmour. He later went on to attend the Regent Street Polytechnic and it was here that he met Nick Mason and Richard Wright. There is little doubt that Roger Waters has had a huge influence on music today.
