Jimmy Eat World is an alternative rock band composed of lead vocalist and guitarist Jim Adkins, guitarist and backing vocalist Tom Linton, bassist Rick Burch and drummer Zach Lind.  The name - Jimmy Eat World - came from a crayon drawing made after an incident between Linton's younger brothers, Jim and Ed, who fought frequently.  Jim usually won, but Ed sought revenge by drawing a picture of Jim shoving the Earth into his mouth; the picture bore the caption, "Jimmy eat world".

The groups commercial breakthrough came with the successful release of several singles from the 2001 album Bleed American.  Four singles from the album charted within the top 20 and "The Middle" peaked at number one.

According to Adkins, the success of Jimmy Eat World has never relied on an elaborate master plan.  "I'm surprised things have worked out as well as they have, because it all has to do with luck and timing," Adkins told Bob Mehr in the Phoenix New TImes.  "Honestly, I expected things to be decent, but I didn't expect to get the chance that I think we're going to get.  That's pretty much the only thing that you can hope for -- is the chance."
