Death Cab for Cutie is an indie rock band formed in Bellingham, WA in 1997. The band consists of Ben Gibbard, Chris Walla, Nick Harmer, and Jason McGerr. Gibbard took the band name from the title of the song written by Neil Innes and Vivian Stanshall and performed by their group, the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, in The Beatles' 1967 film, Magical Mystery Tour. The song's name was in turn taken from a pulp fiction crime magazine.
The quartet made its studio debut with 1998's Something About Airplanes, an album that featured several re-recorded tracks from the You Can Play These Songs with Chords cassette as well as a dreamy, pop-oriented sound reminiscent of Built to Spill. Their second album appeared in 2000 with their third and fourth albums following during the next couple of years.
